Introduction to VOIP

Postby Blacky » Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:54 pm

Voice over IP (VoIP) defines a way to carry voice calls over an IP network including the digitization and packetization of the voice streams. IP Telephony utilizes the VoIP standards to create a telephony system where higher level features such as advanced call routing, voice mail, contact centers, etc., can be utilized.

Most ISP's have some kind of voip plan. for example, IInet has a voip plan that comes standard with their naked DSL. Perfect for in home use. All you need is either a router that has a voip port/card built in, or a separate voip adapter and phone that connects to your adsl modem/router.

This is more of a rolling Intro, if you have anything else you want to post feel free.

They are pretty easy setups you can do for you house and with Naked DSL you can sign up for that then use a voip adapter and use the home phone as usual. Just join a VOIP ISP and you can drop your monthly bills by alot.

I am about to set this up at home as phone bills are getting ridiculous so I'll post up how I go. And get some good price guides from companies.
