Back into it....finally

Postby Blacky » Mon Sep 21, 2009 6:33 pm

After 2 months in "not so sunny" Melbourne were finally back on deck in Perth!
So what have i missed....

Apparently some clown cut through a good 10,000 pairs of telstra cabling in the Sydney CBD whilst conducting some test drilling. How do you drill through 400mm of concrete whilst testing a drill? I wonder if they used dial b4 you dig! Or just decided some random footpath looked like a good place to start.

Ahh and windows 7 student edition looks to be coming out for around $30 or so, those tight ass students will be cheering now that they can upgrade their lappys and still get a carton of woodstock for under $50!

Thats all ive got for now, hopefully now that i have some time we can continue grawing and maybe get some more posters involved in the forum.

Big thanks to all those that have been getting involved!

Iv been a bit slack too.

It was an energy company that did it with a jackhammer and got fibre as well and they used dial before you dig.

Nothing wrong with being a Uni Student :P

I dialed before putting up a fence here and to be extra sure I spoke with a tel$tra guy to make sure the pit on the fence line was inactive. After being assured 100% that everything was aok the fencing guy proceded to dig and cut off mine and the neighbours phone.

Gotta laugh.

Thats alright the dial before you dig team come out once to tell us where the fibre link between ADL and MEL was showed us maps, told us it was on the otherside of the road etc etc. We were putting some drainage in on the fence line.

The escavtor driver puts the bucket in takes a couple of digs, 5mins go past and in the hole is a large trunk cable and the fibre link to ADL - MEL.

The maps were then found to be wrong showing this cable/fibre running on the oppiste side of the road the whole map.

yea this happened to me with the gas line to my house. They assured me it was approx 2m from my fence line. When we hit it at about 4m out i was quiet surprised! Mind you i still got stung $99 for a repair guy to come out. Could of been much worse. If i didnt use the dial b4 you dig they would of slugged me a good $400+

Hopefully the NBN Rollout is going to update the cable maps as they go. I can see quite a few cables around Canberra that aren't listed being cut. Although having said that, NBNCo is talking about buying the Canberra ISP TransACT that has been (bloodly slowly!) rolling out FTTX around the Canberra area. Meanwhile, 15 mins from the Canberra CBD, I'm classified as regional zone 3, with only a Telstra DSLAM at the exchange.
