PS3 Media Server

Postby JackTheTech » Thu Aug 06, 2009 7:56 pm

Was running with Windows Media Player as a server for watching movies on the PS3 but found it to be too slow and stops alot. And found it quite hard to put it in your libary.

Was told about this and found it to be a life saver,

free download and easy to use and adjust.

My 2c worth.

Any media server that supports DLNA/UPnP will be able to stream media to a ps3 or xbox360.

I use FreeNAS at home which is easy to setup and configure and supports multiple protocols and file systems as well as doing UPnP but I've never used it with a PS3 and I don't believe it does transcoding like PS3 Media Server.

XBMC Media Centre and VLC Server are two other strong products that I've heard good things about. I've used XBMC and VLC as clients before and they worked flawlessly.

A question for you Jack - does the PS3 handle mkv files? They're the container typically used for hi-def content.

I've used PS3 Media Server and found it to be quite good... better that the M$ media library thing.

@Jimmeh: just quickly how good of a pc do you need for FreeNAS to work well?
I have a fair amount of media that I would like to access where ever. I have a gig switch and my house is cabled.

Motherboard with x86 processor
128 MB RAM
32 MB free disk space

Pretty thin requirements if you've got an old computer lying around.

Well after a year of using it I still love PS3 Media server.

The only problem I have wis when watching 720 and 1080 movies from MKV files.

The video stream seems to suffer quite badly. I have it hooked up by Cat 5 so don't think its the speeds anyone have any ideas?? I am just copying them to the hard drive on board the PS3 no problems then.
