D-Link any good?

Postby MrEMan » Tue Jul 28, 2009 10:01 pm

Ok from experience they have not been the best/most reliable product/brand in the world but how are they now?
And how does their non domestic gear fair in the real world?

I had a guy out doing a site survey last week and he was sure they stand up against CISCO in everything but price. Price is a contributing factor as we'll be needing over 40 Ap's to cover the site.

Is this for a mine site??

personally id use a more commercial type product just for its reliability. The dlink is more for the home and works well. However i think you may have problems deploying them in a commercial type environment.

Dlink are no good in a commercial type environment? are you looking at making a MESH network?

Dlink in repeater mode, or as an AP are no good for high use environment.

More details about what system to apply the AP's too.

I had a guy try and tell me D-Link was good for a wireless link over 13km, it failed and it cost the client $$ for me to come in and set it up with Senao Gear.

Basically we have various buildings over 3 city blocks and are interested in getting coverage where ever you are, it's quite a large site. Not a mine site.
The equipment is their commercial stuff as I kinda stated in my opening post.

Equipment details. (We'll be needing over 40 APs and a Switch to manage them)
APs: DWL-3500AP - http://www.dlink.com.au/Products.aspx?S ... 44&PID=291
Switch: DWS-3000 - http://www.dlink.com.au/Products.aspx?S ... 75&PID=290

Anyone care to offer alternate suggestions?

haha didnt actually take much notice of this line....(sorry).....to be honest i didnt even realise they made these....not that ive looked. I guess if im going for something commercial dlink isnt the first company that comes to mind.

possibly give the kit a trial, buy 1-2 sets and see how they go before purchasing 40 odd APs.
Also maybe approach a dlink distributor and find out warranty information and weather you can borrow one for a test.

Like your already doing id definatley investigate they're reliability, only because they are a bit of an unknown.
Ive never used them so i should really shut up about now.

Their Switches are ok, but there commercial APs are also shit, drop outs, etc.

I didnt use that exact model, but it was an earlier one (about 2 years ago). I found Netgear Commerical APs to be good and their meshing capabilities to be quite good.

But Trial and error is possibly the best way or look into other brands, like sonicwall make an excellent commercial router but are not well known etc.

Thanks guys... guess we need to try before we buy.

Using a Sonicwall firewall appliance now... not bad.

My gut feeling is to use a real provider so I've started down the CISCO path. Like us the CISCO guy didn't really know D-Link had products that do what they claim.

Still lloking for answers.
