I started doing my Masters of IT at UC but paid it off after completing two units.

My opinion of degrees in IT is fairly low - the only reason to do them is if you want to be a developer.

A combination of experience and vendor certifications is far more helpful in my experience.

I disagree with just being a developer.

Systems Anaylist, Project Manager etc etc, if you wanna become a tech, network technician, a degree isnt prolly the best way to go.

Well a systems analyst is essentially a programmer mixed with a few social skills to herd other developers towards a project goal.

Project management from an IT degree? Perhaps. But using the University of Canberra course syllabus, you get 1 module out of 18 in an IT degree dedicated to project management. I'd rather spend my time learning PRINCE2 or PMBoK.

But hey, each to their own. There's plenty of opportunities for graduates.

The Course im doing at UOB is fairly laid back and other than Ethical and Communication standards, with basic programming and networking, you choose your own stream. But a Major component is IT Project Management with 3 modules so (units, 13weeks per unit) dedicated to learning the ins and outs of Project Management using PMBoK and putting them into real life use.

Another good thing about UOB (University of Ballarat) is IBM, Rural Ambulance Victoria, State Revenue office are all on University grounds, and IBM in conjuntion with UOB offer on the Job University course over 4 years structured to how you want your education to go, and RAV, SRO and other major firms utilize University Students from UOB for the operations of their companies and not just IT. But IBM is a major employer of Uni Students and offers help in most of the Course Ranges (except maybe Human Movement and Physiology) structure a career plan at IBM, last time I check statistics were 1500 employees in Ballarat at IBM and 1000 of them were Part, Fulltime or Intergrated Uni Students.

One of my biggest gripes about the Uni education I was receiving was that it was so out of touch with the real world. It's interesting that UoB is so tightly integrated with IBM and I'd put money on future IBM developments in the area. They get cheap, trained labour and students get enterprise experience as they train.

Well the Degree "Information Technology - Professional Practice" is the IT degree that you work at IBM the Breakdown is this>

First year - 4 units a sem 7 complusary units, 1 elective - $250 a week from IBM and you don't even do anything yet, and they encourage you to apply at their call centre.
2nd year - 8 Units a sem 6 complusary units 2 electives 10hrs a week at the Call centre (if you dont already have job) in a 2nd Lvl Style role and any extra hours payed at regular rate.
3rd year 3 units a sem - More Hours at the Call Centre but in a network administration style roll, or at there AMS or Security Teams (Software Dev, Web Dev, Tender Team, Security Team, Net Support Team, Packaging team) something like $500 a week, plus extra if you work at Call Centre
4th Year 1unit a sem - Project unit (Full time at IBM doing what ever you were doing at appropriate rate 25+/hr) after the 4th year providing you Graduate, you continue doing your Job or work up the IBM team, change locations etc.

If you just go to the Uni you can apply at the Call Centre (First Level Support) do help desk style things, within Uni Timetable accounts such as Myer, QANTAS, WA GOV, NSW GOV, Vic Police, Westpac, NAB etc and slowly work your way up the ranks, 2nd level, management, on-site etc etc but not guanteed like the Prof Prac course.

Most IT courses at UOB is intouch with latest technology, multi media, networking, programming etc etc, Alot of Open source units, ability to do more management units, also dual courses, Human Movement and IT, Mining Engerineering and Computing etc etc.

But I know what you mean, I did a semester at Charles Sturt in Albury and it wasnt anything I would do in Real Life.

But on an Interesting note, IBM has 3 multi level buildings on-site at UOB, One for Security and Software Dev (Network security, AD accounts etc etc) a over full Call Centre which also has Distributed Systems Access and Imaging teams (desktop roll outs, server management) and finally the last building due to be open in Nov this year, dedicated at this stage to BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. Ballarat being a small country town in Central Victoria is a large technology hub thanks to IBM, prolly has the same amount of bandwidth into it as Melbourne CBD.
